Town dock at Pepperrell Cove in Kittery Point

This photo is of Horace Mitchell, a prominent Kittery citizen, and a friend holding up their impressive catch! Fishing was an important part of Kittery’s past.  Like so many other coastal towns in Maine, Kittery was known for being a fishing and boat building community prior to the Civil War. After the Civil War, the development of trains, trolleys and cars, allowed for tourism to boom in the area. Fishing, boating and the beaches continue to be a draw for visitors.
