Many people came out to see the launching of the first submarine, the L-8 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard April 23, 1917. This photo was taken from the Kittery town dock. The L-8 was involved in testing new weapons, and was decommissioned in 1922. She was used as a magnetic torpedo test target and now lies at the bottom of the ocean near Newport, Rhode Island.
